Marrakech to Sahara — 4-Day Desert Tour to Merzouga

Your guide picks you up from your hotel or riad in Marrakech, at a more relaxed pace than the 3-day tour — there's no need to rush. The road winds through Berber villages, almond and walnut groves, and increasingly dramatic mountain views, up to the Tizi n'Tichka pass (2,260 m), the summit of one of North Africa's highest paved roads, where we stop for photos and a coffee break with panoramic views.

We then arrive at Aït Ben Haddou — declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987. You cross the small river and walk through the narrow alleys, the kasbah towers, and up to the granary for the panoramic view. Your guide shows you the exact filming locations from Gladiator, Game of Thrones, Lawrence of Arabia, The Mummy, and others. Lunch is at a restaurant on the opposite hillside, with the kasbah framed in front of you.

Continuing east, we stop in Ouarzazate, Morocco's film capital, with a brief visit to Kasbah Taourirt, the former residence of the powerful Glaoui family. You then follow the legendary "Road of a Thousand Kasbahs" — fortified mud-brick villages, palm groves, and old caravan stops, with the High Atlas always on the horizon — arriving in the Dades Valley in time for sunset, when the rock formations turn from pink to deep red. Dinner is included at the kasbah hotel.

After breakfast, there's time to walk through the "Monkey Fingers" rock formations — distinctive eroded sandstone cliffs unique to this valley — before continuing east to Todra Gorge, where 300-meter-high cliffs rise on both sides of a narrow valley. We walk along the riverbed for about an hour through this dramatic landscape. Lunch is at the gorge.

You then continue east through the towns of Tinerhir, Tinjdad, and Erfoud — known for its fossils and as the gateway to the Sahara. The road opens and the first dunes of Erg Chebbi appear, rising from the flat plain. At the edge of the dunes, you meet your camels and Berber guide for the camel trek into Erg Chebbi as the sun sets and the sand changes color.

You arrive at the Berber camp deep in the dunes, welcomed with mint tea, with time to settle in and climb a dune for the last light. Dinner is traditional Moroccan tagine, salads, bread, and pastries. Afterward, Berber musicians play around the campfire, and you step away from the lights for stargazing.

🏨 Overnight: Desert camp in Erg Chebbi

For those who want to wake early, the sunrise from a high dune above the camp is one of the most memorable moments of the entire trip. A relaxed breakfast follows back at the camp.

The day is what makes this 4-day tour different. We set out in a 4x4 to explore the Merzouga region beyond the dunes. The exact route depends on your interests, but typical stops include:

• A visit to a nomad family in their tent — mint tea, conversation about nomadic life, and a window into a way of living that has changed little for centuries
• The village of Khamlia — home to the Gnaoua people, descendants of sub-Saharan slaves brought across the Sahara, who maintain a distinctive musical tradition. Live performance available
• A walk near Erfoud's fossil sites — Morocco's southeast is one of the world's richest sources of marine fossils, dating back hundreds of millions of years when this region was an ocean
• Optional sandboarding on one of the high dunes — the desert equivalent of snowboarding

Lunch is at a local restaurant in the Merzouga area, or back at the camp depending on the day's route. The afternoon is yours — a quiet siesta at the camp, a swim at one of the auberge pools near the dunes (in summer), a second walk in the dunes at a different time of day, or reading on a terrace overlooking the sand.

We watch the second sunset from a different vantage point than the first night, and dinner is longer and more relaxed — by the second night, the camp feels less new and more like a place you understand.

🏨 Overnight: Desert camp in Erg Chebbi (same camp, or a different one if requested)

There's a second chance to watch the sun rise over the Sahara — many travelers find the second sunrise even more meaningful than the first. After breakfast at the camp, you ride or transfer back to Merzouga village.

The return route takes you through different landscapes than the outbound drive — south through Rissani, then west through the volcanic massif of Jebel Saghro and into the long Draa Valley. The Draa is Morocco's longest river, and its valley is lined with palm groves, mud-brick villages, and old kasbahs. We stop in Agdz — historically a resting point for caravans crossing the Sahara — for tea and photos, with lunch in the Draa Valley.

You then cross back over the High Atlas, the light becoming increasingly golden as you climb — the Tizi n'Tichka pass looks completely different from this direction. You'll be back at your hotel or riad in Marrakech in the early evening.
