After a few days in Marrakech, every traveler I meet says the same thing — they want the ocean. They want cooler air, salt in the wind, and a slower rhythm. Two and a half hours west of the Red City, Essaouira gives them all of that, and more.
Once a Phoenician trading post and later a strategic 18th-century port, Essaouira is one of the most distinctive cities in Morocco. Its white-and-blue medina is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its ramparts have appeared in Game of Thrones and Othello. Its fishing harbor still wakes up each morning to deliver the day’s catch directly to its restaurants. And its laid-back, artistic soul has earned it the nickname Morocco gave it long ago: “The Windy City of Africa.”
This is the Morocco of Atlantic light, of seagulls and old wood, of grilled sardines and Gnaoua music. After forty years of bringing travelers here, it’s still one of my favorite days to share.
